Barbara D. Boyan, Ph.D.

Barbara became a director of the Company in November 2006. Since 2002, Barbara has been a Professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University. During the same timeframe, she has also held the Price Gilbert, Jr. Chair in Tissue Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and has been Deputy Director for Research, Georgia Tech/Emory Center for Engineering of Living Tissues, Georgia Institute of Technology. From 1981 through 2002, she was Professor and Vice Chair for Research, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas, where she also served as Director, Industry University Cooperative Research Center and Director, Center for the Enhancement of the Biology/Biomaterials Interface. Barbara is a founder of Osteobiologics, Inc. and was a founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Orthonics, Inc.

Barbara is a consultant to several companies and institutes, including: EBI, LLP; Exactech, Inc.; Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation; Spinology, Inc.; Biomimetics; OrthoLogic Corporation; Chrysalis BioTechnology, Inc.; and Institute Straumann AG. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of ArthroCare Corporation.

Barbara is a co-founder of the Biomedical Development Corporation, a for-profit business dedicated to the research, development, and commercialization of innovative products in the medical and healthcare fields. She is also a member of the following committees of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons: Women's Health Initiatives; Orthopedic Device Forum; and Biologic Implants. Barbara holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in biology from Rice University.


Ryan Drant

Ryan joined NEA in 1996, and became a General Partner in 2004. He specializes in healthcare investments in the specialty pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare information technology sectors. Present board memberships include BENU, Concentric Medical, ExploraMed III, ForHealth Technologies, Intrinsic Therapeutics, Neotract, PatientKeeper, Simplex Diabetic Supply, Spine Wave, Viacor and Vibrynt. Ryan also co-manages NEA's investment in TriVascular2. Past board memberships include ESP Pharma (acquired by Protein Design Labs, Inc.), Esprit Pharma (acquired by Allergan), FoxHollow Technologies (acquired by ev3 Inc.), Provation Medical (acquired by Wolters Kluwer) and Proxima Therapeutics (acquired by Cytyc Corporation); and, Ryan co-led NEA’s investment in Xcel Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Inc.). Prior to joining NEA, Ryan was with the Health Care Investment Banking Group of Alex. Brown & Sons in San Francisco. Previously, he worked in the San Francisco office of Arthur Andersen & Co. Ryan received a BA from Stanford University.


Brian K. Halak

Brian, a Carticept board member since March 2009, joined Domain in 2001 and became a Partner in 2006. He currently serves on the board of directors of Alimera Sciences, Cortria, Optherion, Tobira Therapeutics, GI Dynamics, Immune Control and Vanda Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VNDA). From 2000 to 2001, Brian was an Associate with Advanced Technology Ventures where he participated in the firm's investments in Plexxikon, Percardia and Emphasys. From 1993 to 1995, he was a Consultant at the Wilkerson Group where he developed strategy for pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Brian is currently a member of the Investment Advisory Council for Ben Franklin Technology Partners and BioAdvance, both seed-stage investment groups in Philadelphia. He also serves as an advisor to Elm Street Ventures. Brian received a doctorate in immunology from Thomas Jefferson University and a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Bob, a Carticept board member since October 2005, joined Frazier Healthcare in 2008 as a General Partner and is a member of the firm’s biopharma and medical device investment teams. Prior to Frazier Healthcare, Bob was a Partner with Domain Associates, having joined the firm in 1996 as a Kauffman Fellow and becoming a Partner in 2000. From 1997-1998, Bob served as the Chief Operating Officer of Small Molecule Therapeutics, a Domain portfolio company subsequently purchased by Morphochem AG. And from 1992 to 1995, Bob was with Pharmacia Biotech in sales. Prior to joining Pharmacia, Bob held a research position at Somatogen, a company developing a recombinant blood substitute that was subsequently bought by Baxter. While attending business school, Bob worked with MedVest, an early-stage venture group in Washington, D.C. Bob managed successful investments in and served on the boards of ESP Pharma (acquired by Protein Design Labs, Inc.), Proxima Therapeutics (acquired by Cytyc Corporation), Onux Medical (acquired by C.R. Bard), NovaCardia (acquired by Merck), Esprit Pharma (acquired by Allergan) and IntraLase (acquired by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.).

Bob serves as an advisory board member for Montagu Newhall Associates, Okapi Ventures, The Medical Industry Group of the National Venture Capital Association and the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. He is also a past founding board member of the Kauffman Fellows Program. Bob received his MBA from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia and a BA from Middlebury College.


Timothy J. Patrick
President and Chief Executive Officer
Carticept Medical, Inc.

Prior to founding Carticept in 2005, Tim was President and CEO of Proxima Therapeutics, Inc., a medical device company that developed and marketed innovative local radiation delivery systems for the treatment of solid cancerous tumors. Proxima was acquired by Cytyc Corporation in March 2005 for approximately $187 million. Prior to co-founding Proxima Therapeutics in 1996, Tim was President of Gesco International, the leading manufacturer of peripherally inserted central venous catheters. Before serving as President of Gesco International, he ran two high growth divisions for McGaw Inc., an oncology drug provider. He also held a number of sales and sales management positions at American Hospital Supply Corporation. Tim has served on the Board of Directors of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed). He is currently on the Board of the Georgia Tech Coulter Grant Committee; serves on the Board of Georgia Bio and chairs its Medical Device Committee; and is a member of the Directors Circle at Yerkes National Primate Research Center. An inventor on several patents related to localized radiation delivery systems, Tim earned his BA in Zoology from Miami University in Ohio.
